Summary

Written beautifully, developed slowly。 All of the unknown places, people’s, and history of middle earth was overwhelming at times。 Beginning was pretty slow but once I got to know the characters it became easier to read。 Looking forward to watching the movie soon!

absolutely amazing!! it feels ironic to gush about this book when it's so old and i feel like everyone's response will be along the lines of "yeah, duh!" but gush i must。 I've been a huge lot movie fan since i was a literal baby, only i just never read the books。 i finally got them for Christmas and now months after *that* I'm finally setting off to read them right。 and my god are they good? if you have trouble with the pacing or language like i did at times, the free theatrical audiobooks on Yo absolutely amazing!! it feels ironic to gush about this book when it's so old and i feel like everyone's response will be along the lines of "yeah, duh!" but gush i must。 I've been a huge lot movie fan since i was a literal baby, only i just never read the books。 i finally got them for Christmas and now months after *that* I'm finally setting off to read them right。 and my god are they good? if you have trouble with the pacing or language like i did at times, the free theatrical audiobooks on Youtube or Spotify work wonders。 i imagine this is what most people who have read this book feel or felt, but I'm just floored at the intricacies of the lore and world-building as well as the simple beauty in the writing。 the long descriptions of the Shire, the Old Forest, Rivendell, Lothlorien, the gates of Argonath, all perfectly covey the different types of beauty and awe the hobbits/the fellowship encounters。 and on the other end of that spectrum, I felt genuinely uneasy and chilled when they made their way through Caradhras or Moria or Anduin。 I don't think I will ever get tired of Tolkien talking about rocks or cliffs or rivers or forests, it's all just completely magical in it's simplicity。 It's sad, I think, that these ordinary descriptions of setting and nature now seem so foreign to people like myself that grow up in cities or suburbs or really anywhere。 The mention of the passage of time in this book, like a throwaway line about a song being untranslatable because of its age, or the current extinction of elves from our earth, or the mention of a language even in their time lost because it was based on wonder are to me just as painful as the set-up evils。 I'm also amazed at the depth of all the characters present。 Of course, there are the four main hobbits, with Frodo and sometimes Sam in that all-important center, and the rest of the Fellowship, if you are counting up the 'main' characters。 But the other characters that play such important roles also seem just as fleshed out and mailable as them。 They all have such clear and distinct voices and mannerisms and core values that it's fun as a reader to get into the nitty-gritty (in my head or in my annotations) analyzing why it is they do what they do。 And in moments of extreme, you get glimpses into their depths that play or played roles later or earlier in the book。 I think a great example of this is near the end, when Frodo goes off to think about taking the east or west road。 The Company argues amongst themselves where he and suddenly Boromir have gone off to and it's Sam (my beloved) that outright says basically what Frodo is all about: "But he's afraid。 Now it's come to the point, he's just plain terrified。 That's what his trouble is。 Of course he's had a bit of schooling, so to speak -- we all have -- since we left home, or he'd be so terrified he'd just fling the Ring in the River and bolt。 But he's still too frightened to start"And of course, before this it's obvious that Frodo is scared, they all are, but saying it out loud in plain terms like this gives further insight both forwards and back。 You remember how slow Frodo was to leave the Shire and to start his journey, and wonder if it was deeper than procrastination。 I knew the book would be better than the movie but this is like leaps and bounds。 The movie is still absolutely wonderful and where they diverge I understand, but books by nature are better and will always afford both more specificity and more room for interpretation。 For example, I loved here how Merry and Pippin chose to follow Frodo and Sam in the beginning, and how it's really driven home that while in a small respect Frodo was chosen -by fate or by the ring itself or by something larger- to carry the burden, it was never forced on him。 In fact, none of the journey was forced on any of the Company。 I'd say a certain amount of fate was afforded given all the ties they had to each other and the timeliness of the Council, perhaps, but that's just the sort of fate to be expected in this kind of book。 I'm really talking about how, when it came down to it, they really were given every chance to walk away, a true chance without malice or manipulation otherwise, and they chose to stay。 There is so much love and friendship and devotion to each other and their ideas that even after the Company is broken and Sam and Frodo went alone down the river, you know they can't just splinter and end there。 None of them, even Merry and Pippin, two hobbits who really shouldn't be here, have chosen to because they believe in their friends and they believe in what is right。 There's strength in the choice of burden。 So this is my long-winded way of saying I'm going to be insufferable and obsessed with this series now。 。。。more

I started this book over 2 months ago, and for a book that is only 500 pages that is a really long time for me。 70% of that time was spent struggling through the first book。 So many people are so excited about this book and that is why I was scared for a long time to start it because what if I was one of the few that did not like it as much while the fanbase is so large。 And it appears that my fears did come true。 The first part was just soooo boring to me, I even skipped certain parts because I I started this book over 2 months ago, and for a book that is only 500 pages that is a really long time for me。 70% of that time was spent struggling through the first book。 So many people are so excited about this book and that is why I was scared for a long time to start it because what if I was one of the few that did not like it as much while the fanbase is so large。 And it appears that my fears did come true。 The first part was just soooo boring to me, I even skipped certain parts because I just did not care about the characters and what was happening to them and the large descriptions and huge amount of names and places that do not seem relevant but might be in a while so I was unsure if I had to remember them。 It wasn't until the second book that I actually started to get a bit more why so many people love it。 Another thing that really bothered me is that appearances, places and songs described in detail but few explanations were given on the motivation of people and everyone felt very "we are good and they are bad because they are bad"。 This made me feel very disconnected from pretty much all characters。 I don't know yet whether or not I'm going to continue with this series, maybe it's just the time and place in life that this book currently is just not suited for me。 But we will see 。。。more

I originally read this book about 25 years or so ago because my then boyfriend, now husband loved the trilogy and I wanted to see what the fuss was and so we could discuss it。 While we didn't really discuss it in any detail, I did understand why he liked it so much。 Fast forward to current times。 Over a year ago, we started reading aloud before bed。 Actually, I read, he listens, the critters join us :) We have read Sherlock Holmes stories, P。G。 Wodehouse, etc。 It is wonderful, when we don't read I originally read this book about 25 years or so ago because my then boyfriend, now husband loved the trilogy and I wanted to see what the fuss was and so we could discuss it。 While we didn't really discuss it in any detail, I did understand why he liked it so much。 Fast forward to current times。 Over a year ago, we started reading aloud before bed。 Actually, I read, he listens, the critters join us :) We have read Sherlock Holmes stories, P。G。 Wodehouse, etc。 It is wonderful, when we don't read together on a rare night, it feels strange。 Anyways。。。It is so wonderful to share not only this time winding down from the day together but the actual stories。 We have conversations about the book which sometimes leads to other topics and I feel we are closer because of it。The insight we share about the stories and characters, the author, why things may happen, the symbolism of things is so interesting。 After nearly 28 years together, we are still learning about ourselves and each other! The Lord of the Rings trilogy is so detailed and has so much to offer。 It doesn't matter if you read it by yourself, like I did at first, or read it with your best friend, like now; you will get so much from reading it。 There is a lot to think about and there are parallels to the real world。 We also like to talk about the differences between the books and the films。 If you have only watched the films, you are missing out。 The film's are enjoyable but obviously due to time constraints, etc。 many things, people, etc had to be changed or left out。 It has taken us a long while to get through The Fellowship because inevitably we find we need to go back a bit each night because someone falls asleep but even that is good because we get to re-experience parts and that can lead to deeper understanding and reflections。I know I didn't talk much about the book but the whole experience is what completes it for me。 。。。more

I was assigned to read this book following "The Hobbit" in my modern fantasy class for school。 This was such a delight to read, though it was more serious and packed with information than "The Hobbit。"I have seen the movies before, but I find the books to be much more compelling and to take some of the elements in a better portrayal。 Specifically the parts that are meant to be scary (The Black Riders, the Balrog, etc。) are much more frightening because I felt that the movie made them quite chees I was assigned to read this book following "The Hobbit" in my modern fantasy class for school。 This was such a delight to read, though it was more serious and packed with information than "The Hobbit。"I have seen the movies before, but I find the books to be much more compelling and to take some of the elements in a better portrayal。 Specifically the parts that are meant to be scary (The Black Riders, the Balrog, etc。) are much more frightening because I felt that the movie made them quite cheesy。 Tolkien's writing is just so wonderful and was so fun to read。 I highly recommend to those who have seen the movies and want to continue on with the experience in a slightly different way。 。。。more

It is the start of a classic。 One that to my shame i have not read but with that this was interesting to read as tolken really has a unique style with lots of songs and beautiful poetry。 He is a descriptive writer and this does make this book start very slowly。 Knowing the volume of the book, this does take some time to venture through before your really invested in the story。 It finished well, and i will be coming back to book 2 shortly after a few novellas to get me a refresh。 I may have rated It is the start of a classic。 One that to my shame i have not read but with that this was interesting to read as tolken really has a unique style with lots of songs and beautiful poetry。 He is a descriptive writer and this does make this book start very slowly。 Knowing the volume of the book, this does take some time to venture through before your really invested in the story。 It finished well, and i will be coming back to book 2 shortly after a few novellas to get me a refresh。 I may have rated it three stars, but it is required reading for the origins of the fantasy genre。 。。。more

3。5/5 starsOkay, I know that this book is iconic。 I appreciate it's impact on the franchise and it's probably the best fantasy book of all time。 But, completely subjectively, this wasn't my favorite thing。 I had trouble with the plot structure, feeling bored for long stretches and then excited for smaller bursts。 The characters, while iconic, were a bit stiff。 I really enjoyed Gimli, though, and Sam remains a favorite。 I had a nice time with the audio book and i'm excited to keep listening to th 3。5/5 starsOkay, I know that this book is iconic。 I appreciate it's impact on the franchise and it's probably the best fantasy book of all time。 But, completely subjectively, this wasn't my favorite thing。 I had trouble with the plot structure, feeling bored for long stretches and then excited for smaller bursts。 The characters, while iconic, were a bit stiff。 I really enjoyed Gimli, though, and Sam remains a favorite。 I had a nice time with the audio book and i'm excited to keep listening to the series。 。。。more

I haven't read The Fellowship of the Ring since I was in middle school in the 1970s, so I decided that this deserved a reread。 Tolkien displays a genius for creating a story world that is so richly populated with people and lush in the setting。 It's impressively ornate。 When I first read the trilogy, I was impatient about the detail。 I skimmed some of the detail about setting in order to focus on plot。 Now I am impressed with the detail and how it pulls the reader into another time and place。 We I haven't read The Fellowship of the Ring since I was in middle school in the 1970s, so I decided that this deserved a reread。 Tolkien displays a genius for creating a story world that is so richly populated with people and lush in the setting。 It's impressively ornate。 When I first read the trilogy, I was impatient about the detail。 I skimmed some of the detail about setting in order to focus on plot。 Now I am impressed with the detail and how it pulls the reader into another time and place。 We own the Peter Jackson film trilogy, so I have seen FotR a half dozen times or more。 However, I had forgotten that there is a lot of detail prior to the fellowship assembling in Rivendell, so I was genuinely intrigued to watch how the Hobbits dodged the dark riders before and after they met up with Strider。 And I also forgot that Pippen established himself as a troublemaker from the get go。 Every story needs a character who sets some action into motion。 It was an interesting reread。 I should not have waited 40+ years to revisit this book。 。。。more
